From Firefighter to Multi-Genre Author: The System That Actually Works
Hey there,
When people find out I'm a firefighter who's published three books across completely different genres—urban crime fiction, emergency services self-help, and children's literature—they usually ask the same question:
"How do you find the time?"
Here's the truth: I don't find time. I make it. And today, I want to share exactly how.
Find out why 1M+ professionals read Superhuman AI daily.
AI won't take over the world. People who know how to use AI will.
Here's how to stay ahead with AI:

The Alarm Bell Mentality
When the alarm goes off at 3 AM, I don't get to wait for inspiration. I suit up and go. That same mentality transformed my writing from "someday" dreams into published reality.
My daily system is simple:
Start every day by reading something (fiction, non-fiction, even incident reports)
Use the Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes writing, 5-minute break
Create "word salad" first drafts—dump everything on the page without editing
Use AI tools in small batches for feedback, not writing
The breakthrough came when I realized I had something tangible to say with Bleed—my urban crime novel about redemption being possible for anyone willing to do the work. That book became profitable within three months, not because it was perfect, but because I showed up consistently.
Your Stories Matter Too
I published that story because it reflected real struggle and street logic. Then I wrote a completely different book—a guide for new firefighters during COVID. Then a children's book about imagination and fire engines.
Three different audiences. Three different styles. Same system.
Here's what I've learned: versatility makes you stronger. Even in non-fiction, you need stories to make your points land. In children's books, every word has to earn its place. Each genre sharpened my skills in the others.
The "Add to the Pile" Philosophy
When writers tell me they're afraid their work isn't good enough, I give them the advice that changed my life:
"Just put it out there. There are plenty of bad works—you're literally just adding to the pile."
Sounds harsh? It's actually liberating. You're probably not going to hit a home run on your first attempt. That's fine. The real work is in showing up.
What I'm Working On
I just published a new article on Medium about how my firefighter mindset shaped my writing career. It's getting shared across platforms today, and I'm excited to see the conversations it starts. If you’re listening to this on the podcast head to the newsletter and get the link. If you’re not a subscriber check out https://iamsevy.beehiiv.com/
The article dives deeper into the system, the mindset shifts, and why I believe anyone can turn their writing into income if they're willing to show up consistently.
This Week's Question
I want to hear from you: What's the biggest obstacle keeping you from writing consistently right now?
Hit reply and tell me. Is it time? Fear? Not knowing where to start? I read every response, and your answers help me create content that actually helps.
Community Spotlight
Our Facebook community is growing with creators who believe in action over perfection. This week, we had someone share their first completed chapter after months of "planning." Another member landed their first freelance writing gig.
Small wins. Consistent action. Real results.

Before You Go
To conclude today's newsletter edition, I'd like to leave you with a quote that I’m currently working on.
“The essence of who you are is captured in your words. Let them be chosen with care.”
I'm still working on that one, but I wanted to share it.
Besides that, remember: every bestseller started with someone sitting down to write their first imperfect sentence. Your stories deserve to exist in the world, but only if you actually write them.
The system works. The question is: will you use it?
