The In-Between Is Still the Work
Nobody talks about the quiet days.
Not the wins. Not the breakthroughs. Not the moment everything finally clicks, and you get to post about how far you've come. I'm talking about the days in between all of that. The days when you're thinking more than you're doing. When nothing has officially changed yet, but something inside you already has.
That's where I am right now.
I've got a transfer pending. I'm carrying around ideas for a book that isn't finished yet. I'm sitting with questions I don't have answers to. And if you looked at my output from the outside, you might think I wasn't doing much at all.
But here's what I've learned after over two decades in the fire service and years of building something called Championized from the ground up. The in-between is not downtime. It's data.
The contemplating you're doing right now? That's the foundation of whatever comes next. The processing, the sitting with it, the long drives, and the early mornings where you're not journaling or planning, you're just thinking. That counts. That's the quiet work nobody posts about and almost nobody respects, including yourself sometimes.
I've written about this in different ways across everything I've put out. In Built to Finish, I talk about what it actually takes to complete something when the middle of the project feels like a swamp. In Bleed, the story itself is one long study of a man carrying a weight that the world can't see, trying to figure out what survival actually looks like. And the book I'm writing now, The Weight of the Job, is maybe the most honest thing I've ever attempted. It's the follow-up to Hey New Guy! and it goes places that one didn't. Because I'm in a different place. Because I've lived more of it.
None of those things got started on a day when everything was perfectly aligned. They got started on days that looked a lot like today.
That's the part the highlight reel skips.
You're not behind. You're not stalling. If you're in the in-between right now, if you're waiting on something to shift, processing something you can't fully name yet, still showing up even though nobody's watching, you are doing the work. Don't let the silence fool you into thinking nothing is happening.
Something is always happening.
